Steve Smith cleared for Sri Lanka Test series, boosts Australia’s Champions Trophy preparations

  • by

Australia received a significant boost as star batter Steve Smith was cleared to join the Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka, starting January 29. Cricket Australia announced that Smith’s right elbow injury, sustained during a Big Bash League (BBL) match, is not as severe as initially feared.

The 35-year-old, who will lead the team in the absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins, underwent a medical evaluation and was cleared to rejoin the squad. “Steve Smith has undergone a specialist medical review following his right elbow injury. He has been cleared to rejoin the Test squad and travel to Dubai,” Cricket Australia confirmed in a media release. Smith is expected to resume batting later this week to prepare for the first Test in Sri Lanka.

Australia heads into the series without Pat Cummins, who is recovering from an ankle injury. The National Selection Panel is closely monitoring Cummins’ progress, as he is slated to lead the team in the ICC Champions Trophy, which begins shortly after the Sri Lanka series.

Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann, another key player in the Test squad, is also recovering from a fractured thumb sustained during the BBL. Cricket Australia announced that Kuhnemann is expected to resume bowling this week and may join the squad in Sri Lanka if his recovery progresses well.

The Sri Lanka series marks the final leg of the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Australia has already secured a spot in the WTC final, scheduled to take place against South Africa in June.

Smith’s availability and leadership come as a timely boost for the Australian side, which aims to maintain momentum in the Test format while gearing up for the ICC Champions Trophy. Known for his ability to perform under pressure, Smith will play a crucial role in ensuring Australia’s success in both campaigns.

Following the Test series in Sri Lanka, Australia will shift focus to the Champions Trophy. The tournament will feature top teams in a high-stakes 50-over format, with Cummins expected to return as captain.
