The Sunrisers Eastern Cape surged into the playoff spots of the SA20 season with a commanding six-wicket victory over Durban’s Super Giants at St George’s Park on Sunday. This marked their second consecutive bonus-point win, signaling a strong comeback after three straight defeats earlier in the tournament.
Key to the Sunrisers’ victory was a stellar performance from Marco Jansen, who delivered a brilliant new-ball spell, claiming 2/23. The left-arm pacer set the tone early by dismissing Brandon King with just the second ball of the innings, igniting the near-capacity crowd at St George’s Park. Jansen credited his success to consistent bowling in the right areas and acknowledged the home fans, saying, “We have the best crowd in the country. Appreciate them coming out.”

Jansen’s efforts were well-supported by an exceptional bowling performance from Richard Gleeson (2/19), Ottneil Baartman (2/30), and left-arm spinner Liam Dawson (2/11). Together, they restricted the Super Giants to a modest 115/8. Gleeson’s two wickets propelled him to the top of the tournament’s wicket-takers list, with eight scalps at an average of 14.25.
While New Zealand’s Kane Williamson held the Super Giants’ innings together with a gritty 44 off 45 balls, he received little support from the rest of the lineup. A late surge from Naveen-ul-Haq, who smashed an unbeaten 30 off 15 balls, added some respectability to the total.
In response, the Sunrisers’ chase was anchored by opener David Bedingham, who hit a rapid 39 to set the foundation. Jordan Hermann chipped in with a steady 23, but it was skipper Aiden Markram who sealed the win in style. Markram’s unbeaten 31 off 20 balls included a massive six over square leg, delighting the home fans and ensuring the team secured the bonus point.
The defending champions now appear to be regaining the form that saw them win back-to-back SA20 titles in the past two seasons. The Orange Army’s spirited fans, accompanied by the iconic brass band, added to the electrifying atmosphere at St George’s Park.
Reflecting on their resurgence, Markram expressed satisfaction with the team’s turnaround, signaling their intent to maintain momentum as the tournament progresses.
