India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has undergone successful surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen and is currently recovering in Germany. The procedure took place in Munich, and the star batter is now focused on regaining fitness ahead of India’s upcoming white-ball tour of Bangladesh.
The 34-year-old confirmed the development through Instagram, stating, “Life update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back.”

Suryakumar, who hasn’t played international cricket since India’s 2023 World Cup final appearance in ODIs, used the current gap in his schedule to address the injury. With India engaged in a five-match Test series in England until August 4, he opted for the surgical intervention during this downtime. The T20I skipper is expected to return in time for the Bangladesh tour, where India will play three ODIs and three T20Is starting August 26 in Chattogram.
A standout figure in Indian cricket’s new era, Suryakumar was appointed T20I captain after India’s victorious World Cup campaign in June 2024, following the retirement of senior icons Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from the shortest format. Since taking charge, he has ushered in a fearless, high-octane approach to T20 batting, which has seen India post record-breaking totals, including a 297-run blitz against Bangladesh in October 2024 — the second-highest T20 score in history.
Suryakumar’s recent form in the IPL 2025 was a testament to his consistency and impact. Playing for Mumbai Indians, he amassed 717 runs — the highest-ever tally by an MI player in a single season and the most by any non-opener in IPL history. Notably, he set a new world record by registering 16 consecutive scores of 25 or more.
