T10 format a game-changer for Sri Lankan cricket, says Jaffna Titans owner

  • by

The inaugural Lanka T10 Super League has emerged as a breeding ground for Sri Lanka’s next generation of cricket stars, with the Jaffna Titans setting an example by blending international expertise with promising local talent. Under the leadership of team owner Janak Patel, the Titans are showcasing how the T10 format can revolutionize cricket in Sri Lanka.

Janak Patel, who also owns a team in the USA T10 league, spoke about the inspiration behind expanding to Sri Lanka. “The idea for Jaffna Titans came when T10 happened in the USA last year. But seeing an entire nation embrace T10 in Sri Lanka got us incredibly excited–that was the main driver behind it,” Patel shared in a press release.

Patel’s decision to invest in Sri Lanka’s cricket scene stems from the country’s rich cricketing history and a visible influx of fresh talent. “Sri Lanka has produced amazing players over the years, and now I see a lot of new talent coming in,” Patel noted.

Patel emphasized the Lanka T10’s structured format, which integrates local players with international stars, as a perfect platform for developing future champions. The Jaffna Titans exemplify this vision, featuring a mix of seasoned internationals like Charith Asalanka, Kusal Mendis, David Wiese, and Dwaine Pretorius alongside rising stars such as young bowler Traveen Matthew.

Matthew has emerged as a standout performer, making a name for himself against world-class competition. Patel praised his potential, saying, “Traveen Matthew has given tough competition to international participants. His exceptional performances show he’s going to be a leader of his generation in the T10 format.”

Reflecting on his impressive performances, Matthew credited his determined mindset and work ethic. “I trust myself and work hard in the middle during the second innings, slowly building momentum. That’s why I succeed in those situations,” Matthew said. Playing alongside international players like Wiese and Pretorius, he added, “It’s a dream to play with world-class players. I’m focusing on this format to shape my white-ball journey.”

Patel highlighted the dynamic nature of the T10 format, which offers young players a unique opportunity to shine. “In T10, one player can change the entire game, and these conditions allow new cricketers to showcase their abilities in a fast-paced format,” he said.

The Titans have also prioritized fostering team chemistry, with experienced players mentoring young talents. “Players like David Wiese have created great chemistry with our youngsters. The more mature players are helping shape the future of Sri Lankan cricket through this format,” Patel added.
