T20 World Cup 2024: India have to play fearless and more aggressive cricket

As the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has urged the Indian cricket team to adopt a more aggressive and fearless approach in their quest for the title. India is set to commence their campaign against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

In a recent discussion on his YouTube channel, Jaffer emphasized the need for Rohit Sharma’s side to break away from their conservative gameplay of previous World Cups. He highlighted the importance of all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s role in the team’s success.

“India have to play a fearless brand of cricket which we have not done in the last 2-3 World Cups. We have to be a little more aggressive. Hardik Pandya’s role as an all-rounder is going to be quite crucial,” Jaffer remarked.

Jaffer also pointed out the significance of Virat Kohli’s performance and his batting position, whether he opens or bats at number three. Kohli’s aggressive style, reminiscent of his recent form in the Indian Premier League, will be vital for India’s batting lineup.

“We don’t know if Virat Kohli will open or bat at No.3. One can only hope that he continues to play the aggressive brand of cricket which he showed during the Indian Premier League. He has done it for many years, and the batting will revolve around him,” Jaffer added.

India’s last ICC trophy win was the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. Since then, the team has come close to winning several major tournaments but has fallen short in crucial matches. They reached the final of the 50-over World Cup in 2023, the semifinals in 2015 and 2019, and the final of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023. In T20 World Cups, they reached the final in 2014 and the semifinals in 2016 and 2022.

This drought of ICC trophies has been a point of contention and a source of motivation for the team. As they prepare for the T20 World Cup 2024, there is a collective hope that a more aggressive and fearless approach will finally lead to breaking this streak.
