Team India announces squad for Champions Trophy 2025 and England Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the upcoming series against England. Mohammed Shami, returning to the ODI setup after more than a year, headlines the selections as India gears up for an intense cricketing calendar. The Champions Trophy is scheduled to begin on February 19, hosted under a hybrid model in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Shami, who last played in the ODI World Cup 2023 final, makes a comeback following a series of setbacks, including ankle surgery. After regaining match fitness in a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal, the veteran pacer also finds a place in the T20I squad for the five-match series against England.

Rohit Sharma will captain the squad, with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The team features a strong batting lineup, including stalwarts Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant. Rahul and Pant also double as the squad’s wicketkeepers.

India’s all-rounders—Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar—bring balance to the team, while the spin department will be led by Kuldeep Yadav, supported by Axar, Jadeja, and Sundar.

In fast bowling, Shami will have the support of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. Notably, Mohammed Siraj and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson are absent from the squad.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be held from February 19 to March 9, featuring eight teams in a 15-match tournament across Pakistan and Dubai. India’s group (Group A) includes Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. Group B comprises Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan.

India will play all its matches in Dubai under the hybrid hosting model. The highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan is scheduled for February 23. India’s campaign begins on February 20 against Bangladesh and concludes its group stage on March 2 against New Zealand.

Before the Champions Trophy, India will face England in a three-match ODI series starting February 6. The squad for the ODI series mirrors the Champions Trophy lineup, with one exception: Harshit Rana will replace Jasprit Bumrah. The ODI series serves as a key preparation opportunity for the ICC tournament.

The action begins earlier with a five-match T20I series against England, starting January 22 in Kolkata. The second and third matches are scheduled for January 25 and 28 in Chennai and Rajkot, respectively. Pune will host the fourth match on January 31, while Mumbai will stage the final game on February 2.

  • Group A: Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Bangladesh
  • Group B: Australia, England, South Africa, Afghanistan

The announcement also marked the debut of newly appointed BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who attended the selection meeting held in Mumbai.
