In anticipation of the highly charged India versus Pakistan match at the ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled for June 9, security measures are set to be significantly heightened at New York’s Eisenhower Park Stadium. This decision follows reports of potential threats to the match, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s office has issued a statement asserting that while there is currently no credible public safety threat, the situation is being closely monitored. The stadium, located 25 miles east of Manhattan, will host eight matches from June 3 to June 12, including the eagerly awaited India-Pakistan clash.

Governor Hochul emphasized her commitment to ensuring the safety and smooth conduct of the games. “I have directed the New York State Police to implement elevated security measures, including increased law enforcement presence, advanced surveillance, and thorough screening processes,” she said. “Public safety is my top priority, and we are committed to ensuring the Cricket World Cup is a safe, enjoyable experience.”
Despite the reported threats, authorities have found no corroborative evidence to substantiate them. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has assured that security will be robust throughout the tournament. An ICC spokesperson highlighted the priority placed on safety and security, stating, “We have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place. We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event.”

India’s schedule in the US includes four games, beginning with their campaign opener against Ireland on June 5, followed by the crucial match against Pakistan on June 9. They will also face the USA on June 12 and conclude their group stage against Canada in Florida on June 15. The Indian team has been training in New York since Tuesday, although star batter Virat Kohli is yet to join them. Kohli, who had an exceptional IPL season with Royal Challengers Bangalore, securing the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs (741 in 15 games), has been given a brief break.
Earlier this month, the ICC and Cricket West Indies, co-hosts of the World Cup along with the USA, reassured fans and players that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety.
