Virat Kohli’s 300th ODI did not turn out as expected, as the star Indian batter was dismissed for just 11 runs off 14 balls in the ICC Champions Trophy league stage match against New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday. Despite showing glimpses of his signature form with two boundaries against Matt Henry, Kohli’s innings was cut short when he played a well-timed shot straight to Glenn Phillips at backward point. Phillips, known for his exceptional fielding, pulled off yet another stunning diving catch to send Kohli back to the pavilion.

India, after losing the toss, was put to bat first by New Zealand. The top order struggled, with skipper Rohit Sharma (15), Shubman Gill (2), and Kohli (11) falling cheaply, leaving India at a precarious 30/3. However, a crucial 98-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer (53*) and Axar Patel (42 off 61 balls, including three fours and a six) helped stabilize the innings. At the end of 30 overs, India stood at 130/4, with Shreyas and KL Rahul (1*) at the crease.

Kohli’s milestone ODIs have historically been mixed in terms of individual performances. Over his 300-match ODI career, he has accumulated an impressive 14,096 runs at an average of 58.00, with 51 centuries and 73 half-centuries. His highest individual score remains 183. Among ODI cricket’s top run-getters, he ranks third, trailing only Kumar Sangakkara (14,234 runs in 404 matches) and Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs in 463 matches). Kohli also holds the record for the most centuries in ODIs.

However, his performances in milestone matches have not always been remarkable. In his 50th ODI, which took place during the 2011 Cricket World Cup against South Africa, he managed just one run off three balls, with India eventually losing the match by three wickets.

His 100th ODI, played against West Indies in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, saw him scoring 22 runs off 18 balls, hitting four boundaries. That match ended in an eight-wicket win for India.

During his 150th ODI at WACA Stadium in Perth in January 2015, Kohli struggled to get going, managing only eight runs off 26 balls against England. India lost that game by three wickets.

The 200th ODI, played against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium in October 2017, was one of the few milestone matches where Kohli delivered a strong performance. He scored a century, making 103 off 102 balls, with eight fours and two sixes. Despite his effort, India lost the match by six wickets.

His 250th ODI came against Australia in Sydney in November 2020, where he contributed 89 runs off 87 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes. However, India suffered a 51-run defeat in that match.

In the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Kohli has put up solid numbers despite his failure in the New Zealand game. In two matches so far, he has scored 133 runs at an average of 66.50, including a century against Pakistan, where he remained unbeaten on 100.
