India’s Washington Sundar delivered a memorable performance at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on Day 4 of the third Test against England, etching his name into the record books with a remarkable four-wicket haul. Making his maiden Test appearance at the venue, Sundar picked up 4 wickets for just 22 runs in 12.1 overs, all clean bowled, becoming only the fifth Indian spinner to take four or more wickets in a Test at Lord’s.
With this feat, Sundar joined an elite group of Indian greats including Bishan Singh Bedi, Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Vinoo Mankad, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan. His impressive spell also saw him cross the 100-wicket mark in international cricket. The 25-year-old now has 30 wickets in 10 Tests, along with 24 in ODIs and 48 in T20Is.

India’s pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Akash Deep had earlier applied pressure with fiery spells but went wicketless despite several close calls. It was Sundar who turned the game by breaking England’s resistance, just when it seemed like captain Ben Stokes and senior batter Joe Root were steering the hosts to safety with a 67-run partnership.
Sundar’s breakthrough came when he cleverly used the rough outside the leg stump to sneak the ball past Root’s bat, bowling him for 40 off 96 balls. His next victim was Jamie Smith, who misjudged the turn and was clean bowled for 8 off 14 deliveries.
In the final session, Sundar continued his assault on England’s middle and lower order. He produced a beautiful delivery with in-drift from around the wicket to dismiss Ben Stokes for 33, crashing the ball into the stumps. He wrapped up his four-wicket haul by bowling Shoaib Bashir, who failed to read the spin and lost his stumps while trying to maneuver at the crease.
England were eventually bowled out for 192, thanks largely to Sundar’s impactful spell that not only shifted the momentum in India’s favor but also marked his arrival as a potent force in Test cricket on English soil.
