West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has been fined 15 percent of his match fee and handed a demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the first Test against Australia in Bridgetown, which the visitors won by 159 runs.
The incident occurred at the end of Day 2, when Sammy made public remarks during a media interaction that were critical of a match official. The International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that the comments violated Article 2.7 of the Code, which prohibits “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an International Match or any Player, Player Support Personnel, Match Official or team participating in any International Match.”

This marks Sammy’s first disciplinary offence within a 24-month period. The charge was brought forward by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, along with third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite. The sanction was confirmed by match referee Javagal Srinath, with Sammy admitting the offence and accepting the penalty without a formal hearing.
Level 1 breaches carry a range of penalties from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 percent of the match fee, and the addition of one or two demerit points.
The Test itself ended in dramatic fashion on Day 3, with Australia bundling out the West Indies in the final session while defending a target of 301. Josh Hazlewood starred with the ball, claiming a decisive 5 for 43 that helped seal the result in Australia’s favour.
The second Test of the series is set to begin on Thursday, 3rd July at the National Cricket Stadium in St George’s, where West Indies will look to bounce back after a tough start to the series.
