West Indies Name 16-Member Squad for T20I Series Against Australia, Include Two Uncapped Players

Cricket West Indies has announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20 International series against Australia, scheduled to take place from July 20 to 28 at Sabina Park in Jamaica and Warner Park in St. Kitts. The series will serve as a key preparation stage as West Indies build towards the ICC T20 World Cup in 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The squad largely features players from the unit that recently defeated Ireland in a T20 series, with two exciting additions in 18-year-old Jewel Andrew and left-arm seamer Jediah Blades. Both players have been handed their maiden T20I call-ups. Andrew, seen as one of the most promising young batters in the Caribbean, is also a backup wicketkeeper and is known for his aggressive style and adaptability against spin. Blades, who made his international debut against Bangladesh in 2024, made headlines with his performances in the inaugural West Indies Breakout League, particularly for his effectiveness during the powerplay overs.

Veteran players including Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, and Rovman Powell have retained their places in the squad, providing balance and experience. Shai Hope will continue to captain the team. The squad also features notable T20 stars like Andre Russell, Alzarri Joseph, Shimron Hetmyer, and Evin Lewis, forming a dynamic and explosive unit.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy expressed optimism about the squad and emphasized the importance of improving West Indies’ T20I ranking and establishing a consistent winning culture ahead of next year’s World Cup. He stated that the group remains focused on fine-tuning their style of play and building momentum.

Sammy also acknowledged the need to improve their home record. In their last two home T20I series, West Indies ended on the losing side, and Sammy noted that this series against Australia presents an opportunity to reestablish dominance at home and boost morale heading into the next competitive cycle.

The full squad for the T20I series against Australia includes: Shai Hope (captain), Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, and Romario Shepherd.
