The 26-year-old replaces legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from international cricket following the Brisbane Test. Tanush Kotian, a right-arm off-spinner and capable batsman, has steadily climbed the ranks in Indian cricket. A product of Mumbai’s age-group cricket system, he was part of India’s Under-19 squad in 2017, playing alongside now-prominent players like Riyan Parag and Arshdeep Singh. While he missed out on the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2018 squad, Kotian’s performances in domestic age-group tournaments, especially the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, soon earned him a spot in Mumbai’s senior team.

Kotian made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 2018 at the age of 20, taking two wickets in the first innings against Saurashtra. Over the years, he has become a cornerstone of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team, amassing 101 wickets at an average of 25.70 in 33 first-class matches. His batting has been equally impressive, scoring 1,525 runs at an average of 41.21, including two centuries and 13 half-centuries.

One of Kotian’s standout domestic performances came during Mumbai’s triumphant Ranji Trophy campaign, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He claimed 29 wickets and scored 502 runs, including a century and five fifties, at an average of 41.83 in 14 innings.

In the ongoing red-ball season, Kotian has already taken 12 wickets in five matches, showcasing his consistent form. His all-round abilities caught the attention of IPL franchises, leading to his signing with the Rajasthan Royals for the 2024 season as a replacement for Adam Zampa. Though he made his IPL debut, he did not get a chance to bowl during his stint.

Kotian’s journey to the national squad gained momentum with a century in the Irani Cup against the Rest of India in October, a performance that propelled him to the India A team. During India A’s tour of Australia, Kotian showed resilience, scoring 44 runs and taking a wicket in the second innings of a tour match in Melbourne.
