Former Pakistan cricket captain Younis Khan has called for regular cricket matches between India and Pakistan, expressing hope for the successful hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. His comments come amid ongoing tensions surrounding India’s decision to not travel to Pakistan for the event.
Speaking during a post-match press conference at the Abu Dhabi T10, Younis emphasized the need for cricket to bridge diplomatic divides. “We need India and Pakistan to play regularly so that the tension diminishes. I hope the Champions Trophy takes place and proves beneficial not only for Pakistan but also for cricket in this region,” he stated.

Earlier this month, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) formally sought clarification from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding India’s refusal to participate in the tournament in Pakistan, citing security concerns. The ICC confirmed in writing that India would not be traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled for early 2025.
In response, the PCB consulted with the Pakistan government to solidify its stance and plans to present its case to the ICC. The board also highlighted Pakistan’s goodwill in traveling to India for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2023, urging India to reciprocate by reconsidering their decision.
Younis Khan underscored the broader impact of the Champions Trophy on cricket in the Asian region. He expressed optimism that the tournament would proceed as planned, helping to elevate cricket in the region and improve relations between the neighboring nations.
The last time India and Pakistan faced each other in a bilateral series was during a white-ball tour in 2012-13, held in India. Since then, the teams have only competed in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup. Pakistan hosted the 2023 Asia Cup under a hybrid model, with India’s matches played in Sri Lanka.
