  • by

India successfully defended their Under-19 T20 World Cup title with a dominant nine-wicket win over South Africa in the final at Bayuemas Oval on Sunday. In a battle between two unbeaten teams, India delivered a commanding performance to lift the coveted trophy for the second time in a row.

The final saw India outplay their opponents in every aspect of the game. The bowlers set the stage early, restricting South Africa to a modest total of 82. Despite a steady start in the chase, India maintained an aggressive approach, reaching 18 without loss in the first two overs. The only hiccup came when G Kamalin was dismissed in the penultimate over of the powerplay, but that did not slow down India’s momentum.

Gongadi Trisha (44*) and Sanika Chalke (26*) guided India to victory, sealing the chase with more than eight overs to spare. Trisha’s brilliant all-round performance earned her the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards. She finished the tournament with 309 runs and seven wickets, playing a crucial role in India’s triumph.

Earlier in the match, South Africa won the toss and chose to bat but struggled to build partnerships. India struck early as Parunika Sisodia dismissed opener Simone Lourens for a three-ball duck. The second breakthrough came when Shabnam Shakil removed the dangerous Jemma Botha for 16(14), leaving South Africa at 20/2 after four overs. The troubles continued when Aayushi cleaned up Diara Ramlakan, reducing them to 29/3 at the end of the powerplay.

By the halfway mark, South Africa was reeling at 33/3. The pressure mounted when captain Kayla Reyneke attempted to break free with a big shot, only to find the hands of Gongadi Trisha at long-off. With the innings nearing its end, South Africa struggled at 58/5. A brief partnership between Fay Cowling and Mieke van Voorst tried to add some respectability to the total, but their efforts were undone when Trisha struck in the 18th over, breaking their stand. The innings eventually collapsed, with South Africa bowled out for 82.

As the final wicket fell, emotions ran high. South African players formed a huddle, visibly distraught as tears streamed down their faces. Meanwhile, India celebrated their supremacy with smiles, having successfully retained their title with an all-round performance that reaffirmed their dominance in the tournament.
