Mitchell Santner Confident Ahead of Champions Trophy Final Against India, Provides Update on Matt Henry’s Injury

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner is optimistic about his team’s chances in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy final against India, drawing confidence from their previous group-stage encounter. The Kiwis secured their spot in the final with a commanding 50-run victory over South Africa in the semi-final at Lahore and now set their sights on ending their 25-year wait for an ICC ODI title.

Speaking after the semi-final, Santner acknowledged India’s strength but highlighted the positives from their last meeting in Dubai, despite a 44-run loss. “Today, we were challenged by a good side, and now we look forward to Dubai. We’ve had a go there already against India, so we’re expecting something similar in terms of conditions. We’ll recover and be ready to go,” he said.

New Zealand had moments of dominance against India in the group stage, especially with their early breakthroughs in the powerplay. Santner believes that experience will help them approach the final with more clarity. “Putting them under pressure last game was good for our confidence. We had a look at them, they had a look at us, and we can take away what worked and what didn’t. Our big boys bowled extremely well at the top, and of course, winning the toss might be nice too,” he added.

Since their iconic victory over India in the 2000 Champions Trophy final, New Zealand has been searching for their next ICC ODI title. Now, 25 years later, they find themselves in a familiar situation—facing the same opponent in the same tournament’s final, hoping to end their long wait for silverware.

In their semi-final clash against South Africa, New Zealand delivered a strong performance with both bat and ball. Captain Kane Williamson (102) and young sensation Rachin Ravindra (108) built a crucial 164-run partnership, setting the foundation for a massive total. While Ravindra played his usual attacking game, Williamson adjusted his approach, accelerating his scoring to capitalize on favorable conditions. Daryl Mitchell (49) and Glenn Phillips (49*) provided the finishing touches, propelling New Zealand to a record-breaking 362/6—the highest total in Champions Trophy history.

Santner played a key role with the ball, taking 3/43, including the vital wickets of Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Heinrich Klaasen. His efforts, along with support from Rachin Ravindra (1/20) and Glenn Phillips (2/27), ensured South Africa struggled in the chase. Reflecting on his performance, Santner said, “It was really pleasing to take three scalps today. Having four all-rounders who can bowl spin makes my job easier, and Rachin’s five overs were great.”

However, New Zealand suffered an injury scare when fast bowler Matt Henry injured his shoulder while attempting a catch in the 29th over. He left the field for treatment but later returned, taking the wicket of Kagiso Rabada in the 46th over and finishing with figures of 2/43. Providing an update on Henry’s condition, Santner said, “We’ll have to wait and see how Matt Henry’s shoulder is. It’s a bit sore, and we’ll know more in the next couple of days.”

Both India and New Zealand final match in the 2025 Champions Trophy is scheduled at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday March 9.
