India has called up Washington Sundar to replace the injured Axar Patel for the much-anticipated final clash against Sri Lanka today.
Axar Patel, who played a crucial role in India’s journey to the final, sustained a left quadriceps strain during their Super Four match against Bangladesh on September 15, rendering him unavailable for the final showdown.

During the gripping encounter against Bangladesh, Axar Patel demonstrated his all-round prowess by scoring an impressive 42 runs from 34 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes. Despite facing multiple blows during his innings, Patel’s resilience kept India in contention. However, the Bangladesh bowlers staged a brilliant comeback, securing a thrilling six-run victory.
Washington Sundar, who has been named as Patel’s replacement, brings a wealth of experience to the Indian squad. In his 16 One Day Internationals (ODIs), Sundar has showcased his all-round abilities, taking 16 wickets at an average of 27.18, with an economy rate close to five runs per over. Additionally, he has contributed with the bat, amassing 233 runs in nine innings, including a noteworthy fifty against New Zealand.
It’s worth noting that Washington Sundar is also a part of India’s Asian Games squad, and his arrival in Colombo has bolstered India’s hopes ahead of the final. After the completion of the Asia Cup final, he is expected to join the Asian Games camp.
