Tamim’s appointment comes just weeks after he was named interim president of the board, a role he assumed following major changes in Bangladesh cricket administration. The 37-year-old, who retired from international cricket in 2023, has repeatedly stressed the need to rebuild the image of Bangladesh cricket on the global stage.
Cricket in Bangladesh has faced significant challenges in recent years, particularly after the political upheaval that followed the 2024 uprising, which led to the removal of long-time ruler Sheikh Hasina. Following elections earlier this year, the new government dissolved the previous BCB over allegations of “gross irregularities” and installed an interim board headed by Tamim.
The former opener strengthened his position on Sunday by winning the board election in convincing fashion. Tamim received 73 votes from 75 councillors and finished ahead of a field of 16 candidates competing for 12 director positions.
During the board’s first meeting after the election, Fahim Sinha was elected vice-president after receiving 66 votes.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Tamim acknowledged the challenges ahead and called for collective efforts to improve the sport’s standing.
“We all have to keep one thing in mind, which is that the reputation damage that Bangladesh cricket has suffered worldwide, I alone cannot fix this.”
“I will need everyone’s support here,” he added.
Bangladesh cricket has been under international scrutiny in recent months. Under the previous administration, Bangladesh refused to participate in this year’s T20 World Cup in India, citing security concerns following fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman’s release by IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. The International Cricket Council subsequently rejected Bangladesh’s request to relocate its matches to Sri Lanka and removed the team from the tournament.
Tamim enters the role as one of the most accomplished cricketers in Bangladesh’s history. During a 15-year international career, he scored more than 15,000 runs across formats and remains the only Bangladeshi player to score centuries in Tests, One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals.
