The stage is set for the opening Test of the new ICC World Test Championship cycle as West Indies and Australia have officially announced their playing XIs for the first match of the three-Test series, beginning Wednesday in Barbados.
West Indies have made several bold changes to their lineup under new captain Roston Chase, signalling a renewed focus on flair and aggression. Among the notable inclusions is Brandon King, who earns his maiden Test cap after a string of impressive performances in white-ball cricket. Returning to the red-ball fold is Shai Hope, who makes his first Test appearance since 2021 and has been entrusted with wicketkeeping duties and the No.6 batting spot.

The Caribbean side has also recalled experienced opener John Campbell to strengthen the top order. The pace attack will be led by Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, and Shamar Joseph, with all-rounder Justin Greaves and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican providing additional support.
Speaking ahead of the match, Roston Chase expressed optimism about the team’s new direction. “We’re looking to play with a bit more flair and bring back that Caribbean style to the game. We’re just looking forward to making the Caribbean nation proud. I just want to ask the fans to support the boys through and through,” Chase said, as quoted by the ICC.
Australia, meanwhile, had earlier confirmed changes to their squad, most notably the inclusion of debutant Sam Konstas and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis. The two step in for the injured Steve Smith and the dropped Marnus Labuschagne, respectively. Captain Pat Cummins confirmed that Konstas will open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja, while Cameron Green retains the No.3 position despite recent struggles in the World Test Championship Final against South Africa.
Josh Inglis, set to bat at No.4 in Smith’s usual spot, will be followed by Travis Head and Beau Webster. Australia has opted for continuity in their bowling department, fielding the same four-bowler unit that featured in the recent Test at Lord’s.
