Following a significant defeat to India in the Perth Test, Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald has announced that the same squad will be retained for the upcoming Adelaide Test, scheduled to commence on December 6. This decision underscores the coaching staff’s confidence in their current lineup despite the recent setback.
In the Perth Test, India mounted a remarkable comeback to secure a resounding 295-run victory after initially being bowled out for just 150 runs in their first innings. The Australian side struggled to contain India’s batting prowess, culminating in a loss that highlighted both teams’ strengths and weaknesses.

McDonald addressed the squad selection in a statement, emphasizing continuity and stability within the team. “The people in that changeroom are the same people that will be in Adelaide. It is always a consideration, wherever you go in the world in terms of the personnel you pick for conditions,” he stated, as reported by the International Cricket Council (ICC). This decision reflects the coach’s belief in the team’s ability to adapt and improve under familiar dynamics.
A key point of discussion has been the fitness of all-rounder Mitchell Marsh. McDonald acknowledged that Marsh was slightly underperformed coming into the Perth Test but considered his performance in the first innings satisfactory. “We’ll wait and see. We knew that Mitch was slightly underdone coming in, but I thought the performance in the first innings was satisfactory,” McDonald added. Despite securing 2/12 in the first innings, Marsh’s bowling was expensive in the second, a concern given his recent hamstring injury during the IPL and limited bowling over the past eight months.
Despite the defeat, McDonald remains optimistic about the team’s morale. “I think morale is pretty good. I think this team is really good at the highs and lows, it’s quite a level team so we’ll be somewhere in the middle of that,” he remarked. This resilience is crucial as Australia prepares to regroup and strategize for the forthcoming Test match in Adelaide.
The Perth Test saw India win the toss and bat first, only to be dismissed for 150 runs, with significant contributions from Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) and Rishabh Pant (37). Australia’s bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood’s impressive 4/29, managed to restrict India initially. However, India’s resurgence in the second innings, bolstered by a formidable partnership between KL Rahul (77) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (161), set a daunting target for Australia.
In response, Australia’s batting lineup faltered, culminating in an all-out score of 238, despite Travis Head’s valiant 89 and Mitchell Marsh’s 47 runs. Jasprit Bumrah’s outstanding performance, taking eight wickets in the match, earned him the Player of the Match accolade.
