Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially appointed former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood as the acting head coach of the national men’s red-ball team. The announcement was confirmed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), marking a significant transition in Pakistan’s coaching setup ahead of the new ICC World Test Championship cycle.
Azhar Mahmood, who has served as both bowling coach and assistant head coach for Pakistan in recent years, will now take over the red-ball reins until the end of his current contract. The PCB expressed full confidence in Mahmood’s ability to guide the Test side, highlighting his rich experience and deep understanding of the game.

“A seasoned cricketing mind, Azhar Mahmood steps into the role with an impressive portfolio of experience,” the PCB said in an official release. “His deep knowledge of the game, combined with hands-on international exposure and proven success in the English county circuit, makes him exceptionally well-suited for this position.”
Mahmood’s coaching credentials are further strengthened by his red-ball pedigree, notably having won two County Championship titles in England. The PCB praised his leadership qualities, tactical sharpness, and commitment to excellence, adding that under his guidance, the Test squad is expected to grow in strength, discipline, and global competitiveness.
The role was previously filled on an interim basis by former fast bowler Aaqib Javed, following the departure of Australian coach Jason Gillespie at the end of last year.
Azhar’s immediate challenge will be preparing Pakistan’s red-ball team for their upcoming home series against South Africa, a two-match encounter that will mark the start of Pakistan’s campaign in the new ICC World Test Championship cycle.
