In a surprising turn of events, Bangladesh’s veteran opener, Tamim Iqbal, has announced his decision to step down as the captain of the Bangladesh ODI team with immediate effect. The 34-year-old made the announcement following a back injury that has ruled him out of the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2023.
Tamim’s announcement was made during a press conference held in the company of Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan on Thursday. The left-handed batsman had recently announced his retirement from ODIs but later reversed the decision. Unfortunately, his injury has now led to the resignation from captaincy.

The decision comes as a setback for Bangladesh as they gear up for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. As the team focuses on preparations for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Tamim’s absence will be felt on and off the field.
Addressing the press, Tamim expressed his determination to manage his workload and contribute as a player despite stepping down as captain. “I will step down as captain and concentrate as a player and try to give my best whenever the opportunity comes,” he stated, according to ICC.
Last month, the experienced cricketer had initially declared a shocking retirement from international cricket during the home ODI series against Afghanistan. However, he reconsidered his decision after a meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, who urged him to return to the sport.
“The honorable Prime Minister invited me to her residence this afternoon. We had a long discussion after which she instructed me to return to cricket. I am withdrawing my retirement. I can say no to anyone, but it is impossible to say no to the most important person in the country,” Tamim said after his meeting with the Prime Minister last month.
As Bangladesh sets its sights on the home ODIs against New Zealand, the team management will hope that Tamim’s injury heals in time for him to make a strong comeback. In his illustrious career, Tamim has been a pivotal figure in Bangladesh cricket, and his presence will be crucial for the team’s success in future endeavors.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board is yet to announce the new captain for the ODI team, and cricket enthusiasts eagerly await updates on this front. As the Asia Cup 2023 approaches, fans will closely follow how the team adapts to the captaincy change and navigates through the challenging tournament.
