Namibian all-rounder David Wiese, currently representing the Deccan Gladiators in the 2024 Abu Dhabi T10 tournament at Zayed Cricket Stadium, shared his motivation to continue excelling in cricket at the age of 39. Speaking in a press release from Abu Dhabi T10, Wiese attributed his longevity in the game to a passion for constant improvement and a drive fueled by those who question his age.
“For me, it’s just the motivation to get better every single day. I love cricket, I enjoy training, and I enjoy trying to improve. Every single time somebody mentions my age, it motivates me a little bit more,” Wiese said. “Maybe I have a chip on my shoulder when everybody mentions how old I am, but that just drives me to push harder.”

Wiese emphasized that advancements in fitness and technology have played a significant role in enabling athletes to prolong their careers. “In the modern age, people are fitter and stronger. Technologies have advanced, and physios have developed new techniques that help players last longer. The game is also more professional now, and there’s a lot more on the line, which keeps players motivated to stay in the game longer,” he noted.
He highlighted that cricket today is about more than just power or technique—it’s a combination of both, supported by improved conditioning and resources.
Wiese also praised tournaments like the Abu Dhabi T10, which provide young players with a unique opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals. “It’s massive for younger players and especially local players to rub shoulders with some of the best guys in the world. They might not otherwise get that chance,” Wiese said.
He stressed the mutual benefit of such interactions, noting that experienced players can also learn from the fresh perspectives of younger cricketers. “The youngsters often have different theories and techniques. They view the game differently, which can provide valuable insights even for seasoned players like myself.”
