Shubman Gill’s impressive 67-run performance propelled the Gujarat Giants to a 6-wicket victory against Punjab Kings in their 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium on Thursday. Gill led Gujarat’s scoring, while Wriddhiman Saha contributed 30 runs off 19 balls. Punjab’s bowlers, Sam Curran, Harpreet Brar, Kagiso Rabada, and Arshdeep Singh, each took a wicket.

In pursuit of a 154-run target, Gujarat’s openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill made a strong start, scoring 18 runs off Arshdeep Singh in the third over. Rabada entered the attack and dismissed Saha, who had scored 30. Gujarat’s batsmen were then contained by Punjab’s effective bowling. Gujarat’s score reached 80/1 after 10 overs, with Sai Sudharsan at the crease. However, Arshdeep dismissed him for 19, bringing Captain Hardik Pandya to bat.

Brar claimed Pandya’s wicket for 8 runs in the 15th over, and David Miller joined the batting lineup. Gill completed his half-century in 40 balls during the 16th over. Curran took Gill’s wicket for 67 in the final over, but Rahul Tewatia sealed the victory for Gujarat with a boundary, securing a 6-wicket win.

Earlier, strong performances by Shahrukh Khan, Jitesh Sharma, and Matthew Short led Punjab Kings to a total of 153/8. Matthew led the team with 36 runs off 24 balls, with Shahrukh and Jitesh contributing 22 and 25 runs, respectively. Mohit Sharma took two wickets for Gujarat, while Joshua Little, Mohammed Shami, and Rashid Khan each claimed one.

After opting to bowl first, Gujarat’s Shami struck early, dismissing Prabhsimran for a duck. Matthew Short entered the fray and hit back-to-back boundaries off Shami. Punjab’s captain Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed for 8 runs by Little in the 4th over. Short continued to pile on runs but was eventually dismissed by Rashid Khan in the 7th over.

Jitesh Sharma then joined the batting lineup, with Punjab’s score at 75/3 after 10 overs. The partnership of Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Jitesh exploited the favorable batting conditions, rotating the strike effectively and hitting loose balls. Mohit Sharma dismissed Jitesh for 25 in the 13th over.

Sam Curran and Rajapaksa took the attack to Gujarat’s bowlers, but Rajapaksa was eventually dismissed by Alzarri Joseph for 20 runs. Shahrukh Khan entered the game and hit a six off his first ball. In the 19th over, Mohit Sharma claimed Curran’s wicket for 22 runs. In the final over, Little’s brilliant spell held Punjab Kings to a total of 153/8.
