Uncapped all-rounder Beau Webster has been included in Australia’s squad for the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, starting December 6 at the Adelaide Oval. The 30-year-old was called up as cover for Mitchell Marsh, who played the first Test in Perth but has been managing limited bowling workloads due to earlier injury concerns.
Webster’s selection comes on the back of an impressive run in red-ball cricket. He performed notably in the unofficial Test series against India A, where he emerged as the second-highest run-scorer for Australia A, amassing 145 runs at an average of 72.50, including a half-century. Additionally, his bowling contributions stood out, with seven wickets at an average under 20.

Speaking about his selection, Webster expressed his excitement.
“To get a few runs and wickets (for Australia A) was pleasing against a strong Indian side,” Webster said. “Any time you are playing ‘A’ cricket, it is one step below Test level, so it does hold you in good stead.”
Webster acknowledged the tight schedule, noting that he would provide cover for the middle-order in the upcoming Adelaide Test and the subsequent match at the Gabba.
A consistent performer in domestic cricket, Webster has played 93 first-class matches, scoring 5,297 runs at an average of 37.83, with 12 centuries. His bowling, which combines off-spin and pace, has yielded 148 wickets at an average of 37.39. This year alone, he has showcased exceptional form, scoring 1,121 runs in 15 matches at an average of 53.38, including three centuries and five fifties.
Interestingly, Webster adapted his game during the COVID-19 lockdown, learning the art of fast bowling to complement his off-spin—a skill that could prove vital for Australia.
The inclusion of Webster strengthens Australia’s squad as they look to recover from a heavy defeat in the first Test in Perth, where India handed them a record 295-run loss. Marsh, who bowled 17 overs in Perth—his most in a Test since 2019—continues to be monitored for fitness.
