Team India has showcased a masterclass performance with both bat and ball, bulldozing Australia in the second One-Day International (ODI) match to claim the three-match series with a commanding 2-0 lead at Holkar Cricket Stadium. The match, which saw India reach their highest 50-over total against Australia, was decided by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method after rain briefly interrupted play.

Put in to bat first, India started cautiously but quickly found their rhythm. Ruturaj Gaikwad fell early to Josh Hazlewood’s brilliance, caught behind by Alex Carey, leaving India at 16/1. However, the duo of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer took charge of the innings and began rebuilding steadily.

Iyer’s elegant strokeplay and Gill’s aggressive approach resulted in a partnership that left the Australian bowlers searching for answers. They not only achieved the 50-run mark in just 7.3 overs but also brought up their 100-run stand in a mere 65 balls. The pair continued to torment the Australian attack, reaching the 150-run partnership in just 107 balls.

Shreyas Iyer displayed remarkable form, eventually reaching his third ODI century in 86 balls, embellishing his innings with 10 fours and three sixes. Their partnership finally broke when Sean Abbott dismissed Iyer for a splendid 105 off 90 balls. India was 216/2 at this point in the 30th over.

Shubman Gill, who had contributed significantly with his century, was caught behind by Alex Carey off Cameron Green’s bowling for 104 off 97 balls. This marked the end of their partnership, with India at 243/3 in the 34th over.

Skipper KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan continued to propel India’s innings, bringing the team to the 300-run mark in the 40th over. KL Rahul reached his half-century in 35 balls, further solidifying India’s position. However, Kishan was dismissed for 31 off 18 balls by Adam Zampa, leaving India at 302/4.

Suryakumar Yadav entered the crease and immediately lit up the stadium, delivering a spectacular performance by smashing Cameron Green for four successive sixes in the 44th over. His late fireworks propelled India past the 350-run mark in the 45th over.

Despite taking a beating from Suryakumar, Green managed to dismiss KL Rahul for 52 off 38 balls. At this point, India was 355/5 in the 46th over. Suryakumar Yadav, however, continued his onslaught, reaching his second successive ODI fifty in just 24 balls, ending the innings unbeaten at 72* off 37 balls, including six fours and six sixes.

Ravindra Jadeja provided crucial support with an unbeaten 13* off 9 balls. India concluded their innings with a formidable total of 399/5 in their allotted 50 overs.

Chasing a monumental target of 400, Australia faced early setbacks when Prasidh Krishna dismissed Matthew Short and Steve Smith in consecutive balls in the second over. Smith’s golden duck added to his recent batting woes.

Despite the loss of their key batters early in the innings, Australia opted for an aggressive approach and reached 56/2 in the ninth over before rain temporarily halted play for an hour.

After the rain delay, Australia had a revised target of 317 runs in 33 overs. However, India’s spinners, led by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, proved to be too much for the Australian lineup to handle. Ashwin accounted for crucial wickets, including that of David Warner, who scored 53 off 39 balls.

Jadeja contributed with the ball as well, dismissing Alex Carey, while Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Shami also chipped in with wickets. Cameron Green’s run-out in the 20th over added to Australia’s woes.

Despite a counter-attacking knock by Sean Abbott, who took boundaries in every over, Australia was bowled out for 217 runs in 28.2 overs, giving India a resounding 99-run victory via the DLS method.

As per updated India cricket schedule, the 3rd and final ODI between India and Australia will be played at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on Wednesday September 27.
