IND vs ENG 2nd ODI: Rohit Sharma’s stunning century leads India to series win over England in second ODI

  • by

India secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over England in the second ODI at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, sealing the series 2-0. The win was powered by Rohit Sharma’s explosive century, which silenced his critics and provided a dominant display of stroke play.

Chasing a competitive target of 305, Rohit led from the front with a breathtaking 119 off 90 balls, hitting 12 fours and 7 sixes. His opening partnership with Shubman Gill (60 off 52 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) laid a solid foundation for India, as the duo added 136 runs. England finally got a breakthrough when Jamie Overton dismissed Gill in the 17th over, giving the visitors a much-needed opening.

Virat Kohli walked in next but struggled to make an impact, managing only 5 runs before falling to Adil Rashid in the 20th over. However, Shreyas Iyer (44 off 47 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) kept the scoreboard ticking, building a crucial 70-run stand with Rohit.

Rohit reached his 32nd ODI century in style, smashing a six over long-off in the 26th over. However, England found a way back into the game when Liam Livingstone dismissed the Indian skipper for 119 in the 30th over. Following his dismissal, England seized the momentum, picking up wickets in quick succession.

Shreyas Iyer was run out in the 37th over, and KL Rahul (10 off 14 balls, 1 four) followed suit in the 41st over after being removed by Overton. Hardik Pandya made a brief but impactful appearance, scoring 10 runs off 6 balls, including two boundaries, before losing his wicket to Gus Atkinson in the 42nd over.

With the game still hanging in the balance, Axar Patel (41* off 43 balls, 4 fours) and Ravindra Jadeja (11* off 7 balls, 2 fours) ensured India crossed the finish line. It was Jadeja who sealed the victory in style, driving a four through the mid-off region to complete the chase in the 45th over.

Earlier in the match, England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Ben Duckett and Philip Salt provided a solid start, putting up an 81-run stand. However, debutant Varun Chakravarthy broke the partnership in the 11th over, dismissing Salt for 26.

Duckett continued to bat aggressively, scoring 65 off 56 balls with 10 boundaries before falling to Ravindra Jadeja in the 16th over. England completed their 100-run mark soon after but kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Joe Root anchored the innings with a composed 69 off 72 balls (6 fours) before being dismissed by Jadeja in the 43rd over. Contributions from Liam Livingstone (41 off 32 balls, 2 fours, 2 sixes), Buttler (34 off 35 balls, 2 fours), and Harry Brook (31 off 52 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) helped England maintain a decent run rate, but they failed to capitalize in the death overs.

Adil Rashid played a brief cameo, smashing three consecutive boundaries off Mohammed Shami in the 48th over before getting run out for 14 in the 49th over. England’s innings ended at 304 in 49.5 overs, with three wickets falling to run-outs, including two in the final over.

For India, Jadeja was the standout bowler, taking 3/35 in his 10-over spell, including a maiden. Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana, and Mohammed Shami chipped in with a wicket each.

Defending 305, England’s bowlers had a tough task against India’s strong batting lineup. Jamie Overton was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2/43 in his 5-over spell. Adil Rashid, Gus Atkinson, and Liam Livingstone claimed one wicket each, but they struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting approach.

With this victory, India has taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. The Men in Blue will now travel to Ahmedabad for the third and final ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday, aiming for a clean sweep.

Brief Score:

  • England 304 (Joe Root 69, Ben Duckett 65, Liam Livingstone 41; Ravindra Jadeja 3/35)
  • India 308/6 (Rohit Sharma 119, Shreyas Iyer 44, Axar Patel 41*; Jamie Overton 2/27).
