In a much-anticipated showdown, arch-rivals India and Pakistan are gearing up to face each other at the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 as announced by ICC. The clash is scheduled to take place on October 15 at the prestigious Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India. This encounter marks the eighth meeting between the two cricketing powerhouses in the history of men’s World Cup tournaments.
India’s campaign in the tournament will kick off on October 8 when they take on Australia at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Indian team will participate in a total of nine matches during the league stage. On the other hand, Pakistan will begin their World Cup journey against a team from the CWC Qualifiers (TBC).

The rivalry between India and Pakistan has always captured the imagination of cricket fans around the world. Historically, India has dominated the encounters between the two teams in World Cup tournaments, having won all seven previous matches. However, the Pakistani team will be eager to break their jinx against India in the 50-over format, following their recent success in the T20 World Cup.
Both teams may play at least five ODI matches during different occasions including ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India and Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.
The last time these cricketing giants met in a World Cup match was in 2019 at Old Trafford. India emerged victorious in that clash, posting an imposing total of 336/5 thanks to a scintillating 140 off just 113 balls by India’s captain, Rohit Sharma. Pakistan’s pursuit of victory was halted by a disciplined bowling performance from India, as they were restricted to 212/6 in a rain-affected match, resulting in an 89-run win for India via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.

One of the most memorable encounters between the two teams took place during the 2011 World Cup. In a thrilling semi-final clash held at Mohali, India, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar played a pivotal role with his 85-run innings, while India’s bowlers exhibited a united front to dismiss Pakistan and secure a hard-fought 29-run victory.
India’s recent dominance in World Cup matches against Pakistan was briefly interrupted in 2021. However, they swiftly regained their supremacy in the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup, where they clinched a memorable victory over Pakistan in a dramatic chase at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The Indian team was propelled by a remarkable innings from former captain Virat Kohli.
