Indian women’s cricket team Announce 15-Member Squad for ODI Series Against Ireland, Smriti Mandhana Named Captain

The Indian women’s cricket team has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Ireland, set to begin on January 10 at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. The squad sees notable changes, with regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur and pacer Renuka Singh Thakur rested. In their absence, Smriti Mandhana will lead the side, with Deepti Sharma named as vice-captain for the series.

The series will provide a platform for the Indian team to test their depth as they continue their strong run in the 50-over format. India’s last ODI outing saw them register a commanding 3-0 series victory against the West Indies in December.

Mandhana’s appointment as captain comes on the back of her exceptional form in recent matches. She finished as the leading run-scorer in the T20I series against the West Indies, amassing 193 runs at an average of 64.33 and a strike rate of 159.50. In the ODIs, she was the second-highest run-scorer, collecting 148 runs at an average of 49.33.

Harleen Deol, who recently made a return to the national side, retains her spot in the squad after a remarkable performance against the West Indies. The middle-order batter scored her maiden ODI century in the series and will be looking to maintain her momentum.

The three-match series against Ireland is scheduled as follows:

  • First ODI: January 10
  • Second ODI: January 12
  • Third ODI: January 15

All matches will be played in Rajkot, providing a consistent venue for both teams to adapt to conditions.

The Indian squad, selected by the Women’s Selection Committee, is a mix of experience and emerging talent. With senior players like Harmanpreet and Renuka rested, the series presents an opportunity for others to make a mark.

India’s recent performances in ODIs have been impressive, and the team will aim to continue their winning streak under the leadership of Mandhana, who is viewed as one of the most consistent performers in the team. The BCCI, in its statement, confirmed the squad selection and expressed confidence in the team’s preparation ahead of the series.
