The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 will be remembered as the most explosive batting season in the tournament’s history, with teams and players rewriting several long-standing records throughout the campaign. The season concluded on Sunday with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets in the final to successfully defend their title, but the tournament’s biggest story was the unprecedented dominance of batters across all venues.
From the opening match to the final, IPL 2026 produced record-breaking run-scoring numbers. A total of 27,450 runs were scored during the season, making it the highest-scoring edition in IPL history. Batters also enjoyed the best runs-per-wicket ratio ever recorded in the competition at 31.26, highlighting how difficult it became for bowlers to contain scoring rates and take wickets consistently.

The attacking approach adopted by teams throughout the tournament resulted in another major milestone, with IPL 2026 registering the highest run rate in league history. Teams scored at an average of 9.88 runs per over, reflecting the increasingly aggressive style of T20 cricket and the growing influence of fearless young batters alongside experienced stars.
Boundary-hitting reached unprecedented levels as well. Across the season, players smashed 2,332 fours and 1,426 sixes, both records for a single IPL edition. Stadiums around the country witnessed relentless attacking cricket as batters regularly took on bowlers from the start of their innings.
The season also produced a record number of centuries. A total of 15 hundreds were scored during IPL 2026, with Chennai Super Kings batter Sanju Samson emerging as the only player to register two centuries during the campaign. Several other batters crossed the three-figure mark as teams continued to post massive totals throughout the tournament.
No player symbolized the batting dominance of IPL 2026 more than Rajasthan Royals teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old sensation finished as the Orange Cap winner after scoring 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of over 237. He also broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for most sixes in a single IPL season, smashing an incredible 72 sixes.
High-scoring encounters became a regular feature throughout the competition. Teams crossed the 200-run mark on 65 occasions, the highest number ever recorded in an IPL season. Even more remarkably, batters successfully chased targets of 200 or more on 17 occasions, another tournament record that underlined the fearless nature of modern T20 cricket.
While batters dominated the headlines, the season also produced memorable performances from bowlers. Gujarat Titans pacer Kagiso Rabada finished as the leading wicket-taker and claimed the Purple Cap with 29 wickets, while RCB’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar closely followed with 28 wickets during their title-winning campaign.
The tournament ended with a relatively modest final by IPL 2026 standards. After being put in to bat by RCB captain Rajat Patidar, Gujarat Titans managed 155/8 in their 20 overs. Washington Sundar fought hard with an unbeaten 50 from 37 deliveries, while Nishant Sindhu contributed 20 runs. RCB’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Rasikh Dar Salam (3/27), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/29) and Josh Hazlewood (2/37), ensured GT never gained momentum.
In reply, RCB made a strong start through Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer, who shared a 62-run opening stand. Although Gujarat briefly threatened a comeback by reducing RCB to 132/5, Kohli once again demonstrated his class on the biggest stage. The former RCB captain remained unbeaten on 75 from 42 balls, striking nine fours and three sixes to guide his side to victory with two overs remaining.
The triumph secured RCB’s second consecutive IPL title and made them only the third franchise after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to successfully defend the championship. It also marked the franchise’s fourth major Indian cricket trophy overall, including two Women’s Premier League titles.
However, beyond RCB’s historic achievement, IPL 2026 will be remembered as the season that pushed batting to unprecedented levels. Record runs, record boundaries, record centuries, record 200-plus totals and record successful chases combined to create what many regard as the most entertaining and highest-scoring edition in the history of the Indian Premier League.
