Rajasthan Royals teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as the biggest individual star of IPL 2026 after becoming the youngest player in tournament history to win the Orange Cap and sweeping several major awards at the end of a remarkable season. At just 15 years and 65 days old, the Bihar-born batter not only finished as the highest run-scorer of the tournament but also claimed the Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player of the Season, Super Striker of the Season, Orange Cap and Super Sixes of the Season awards.
Sooryavanshi’s incredible campaign saw him score 776 runs in 16 matches at a staggering strike rate of 237.30. His fearless batting helped him break several long-standing IPL records and establish himself as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket. He also smashed a record 72 sixes during the season, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous IPL record of 59 sixes in a single edition of the tournament.

The teenager’s Orange Cap triumph was confirmed after Gujarat Titans openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan failed to make significant scores in the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Gill was dismissed for just 10 runs, while Sudharsan managed only 12, ensuring that neither player could catch Sooryavanshi’s tally. Even Virat Kohli, who entered the final with 600 runs, was unable to challenge the Rajasthan Royals batter’s commanding lead.
By winning the Orange Cap, Sooryavanshi broke the record previously held by Sai Sudharsan, who had become the youngest winner at 23 years and 231 days in 2025. Before Sudharsan, the record belonged to Shubman Gill, who won the award in 2023 at 23 years and 263 days. Sooryavanshi’s achievement at just 15 years of age has set a new benchmark that could stand for years.
His season could have been even more extraordinary. Sooryavanshi narrowly missed equalling Virat Kohli’s record of four centuries in a single IPL season after being dismissed in the nineties on three occasions. He scored 93 against Lucknow Super Giants, 97 in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad and 96 in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans, alongside his century against Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier in the competition.
The youngster also reached another historic milestone by becoming the fastest batter to complete 1,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced. He reached the landmark in just 440 deliveries, surpassing Andre Russell’s previous record. In terms of innings, he became the second-fastest player to reach 1,000 IPL runs, achieving the feat in 23 innings, behind only Shaun Marsh’s 21 innings.
Sooryavanshi’s performances earned praise from across the cricketing world, including Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma. Speaking after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s title-winning campaign, Sharma described the teenager as a special talent, saying, “He’s a brilliant player, an extraordinary player, and it was a pleasure to see him give such a wonderful performance at such a young age.”
Reflecting on his award-winning season, Sooryavanshi remained grounded despite the accolades. “It feels good, but I feel a bit under pressure having to give the interview. I am not drinking milk nowadays. How to play each game, you can’t play every game the same way. If I have to stay injury-free, I have to work on my fitness. Everyone is very supportive. All senior players, support staff, everyone backs me, and it’s a good atmosphere,” he said after receiving the Most Valuable Player award.
With record-breaking numbers, multiple individual honours and praise from some of the biggest names in Indian cricket, Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 campaign will be remembered as one of the greatest seasons ever produced by a young player. His rise has already sparked discussions about his future with the Indian national team, with many viewing him as a future star across all formats of the game.
