IPL auction 2023: Analyzing Gujarat Titans’ auction strategy

Gujrat Titans stunned the cricketing world when they won the IPL last year

The Gujrat Titans stunned the cricketing world when they won the IPL trophy in their maiden season. Although they didn’t look like a championship-winning team on paper, they proved they are more than the sum of their parts and won the trophy.

Before the start of this season’s auction, the Gujarat Titans made a trade with the Kolkata Knight Riders, sending Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Lockie Ferguson. They also released Jason Roy, Dominic Drakes, Gurkeerat Singh, and Varun Aaron from their squad.

The Titans have a strong depth of players to choose from in virtually every position. Despite letting go of Lockie Ferguson, they still have a formidable pace attack with Mohammed Shami, Alzarri Joseph, Hardik Pandya, Yash Dayal, and Pradeep Sangwan. Rashid Khan is supported by R Sai Kishore and Jayant Yadav, depending on the conditions. Tewatia, although largely under-utilized by Hardik Pandya last year, is also available as a backup option.

Even after releasing Jason Roy and Gurbaz, the team still has a solid opening pair of Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill, followed by Pandya, David Miller and the impressive Abhinav Manohar. Matthew Wade provides additional depth as a backup opener and a finisher.

The Titans will have a budget of INR 19.25 crore at the auction this time. They will be able to purchase a maximum of seven players, with a limit of three being from overseas teams.

Gujarat often played with a batsman short last season and would like some firepower in the middle. They might go for South African hitter Rilee Rossouw or England’s Harry Brook and Phil Salt to beef up their batting. They don’t have a solid replacement for Rashid Khan and although he is irreplaceable, Gujarat can go for his teammate in the national team Mohammad Nabi.
