Jay Shah takes charge as ICC chief today

Jay Shah, former Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), officially began his tenure as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chair on Sunday, December 1. Shah takes over from Greg Barclay, who served in the role since November 2020.

In a statement marking the start of his tenure, Jay Shah expressed gratitude for the support of ICC Directors and Member Boards. “I am honoured to take on the role of ICC Chair at such an exciting time for the sport. As we prepare for cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, we have a unique opportunity to grow the game and engage fans worldwide,” Shah said.

Shah outlined his priorities, which include leveraging the LA28 Olympics as a platform to globalize cricket further and accelerating the development of the women’s game. “We are at a critical juncture, balancing multiple formats while ensuring the growth of the women’s game. Cricket holds immense potential globally, and I look forward to working with the ICC team and Member countries to seize these opportunities,” he added.

Elected unopposed in August 2024 after Greg Barclay chose not to seek a third term, Shah’s rise to the ICC Chair was widely anticipated. His journey in cricket administration began in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), where he oversaw the construction of the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2019, he became the youngest honorary Secretary of the BCCI, further cementing his influence in global cricket governance.

Shah acknowledged Barclay’s contributions to the ICC during his four-year tenure, stating, “I would like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership and the milestones achieved during his term. I aim to build on this foundation and work towards expanding cricket’s global reach.”
