Venkatesh Iyer’s splendid innings of 83 off 40 balls brought Kolkata closer to the target set by Gujarat.

Chasing the target, Kolkata lost their first wicket early as Mohammed Shami dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for 15 runs off 12 balls in the 3rd over. By the end of the 9th over, Venkatesh and Nitish added a fifty-run partnership, bringing Kolkata closer to the massive target. KKR reached the 150-run mark in 15.2 overs before Alzarri Joseph claimed Venkatesh’s crucial wicket, who scored a brilliant 83 off 40 balls.

Rashid Khan, GT’s stand-in skipper, took the first hat-trick of IPL 2023, dismissing Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Shardul Thakur, strengthening the Titans’ position. However, Rinku Singh’s five consecutive sixes in the final over helped Kolkata chase down the massive total set by Gujarat, with Yash Dayal conceding 31 runs in that over.

Earlier, thanks to Vijay Shankar’s powerful batting in the death overs and Sudharsan’s strong foundation, Gujarat Titans posted a competitive total of 204/4 against Kolkata Knight Riders. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Gujarat openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill started cautiously. However, Sunil Narine claimed Saha’s wicket in the fourth over, leaving GT at 33/1 in 4.2 overs.

Gujarat reached the 50-run mark in 5.1 overs and had 54/1 at the end of the Powerplay, with Gill scoring 20 off 14 balls and Sai Sudharsan contributing 5 off 5 balls. Abhinav Manohar added a quick 14 off 8 balls before Suyash Sharma dismissed him, leaving GT at 118/3 after 13.3 overs. By the 15th over, Gujarat had scored 132/3, with Vijay Shankar and Sudharsan at the crease. Sudharsan scored 46 off 31 balls, while Shankar had 2 off 3 balls. In the final stages of the match, Shankar capitalized on the platform set by the top batters, punishing Ferguson for 25 runs in an over, which included two sixes, two fours, and a no-ball. Shankar reached his fifty in just 21 balls with a six and continued his onslaught by hitting two more sixes in consecutive balls, completing a hat-trick of sixes.
