New Zealand skipper Tom Latham is optimistic as his team prepares to face England in the first Test of a three-match series at Christchurch’s Hagley Oval. The Test, set to begin on Friday, holds significant stakes for the Kiwis, who aim to keep their hopes alive for a spot in the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s with a clean 3-0 sweep.
Despite England being out of contention for the final, Latham emphasized the importance of adapting quickly to the familiar home conditions. “New conditions, new team – for us, it’s about taking as much confidence as we can from the previous series. Coming back to familiar conditions is always nice, and we need to build on that momentum,” Latham told ESPNcricinfo.

The Kiwi skipper highlighted his team’s adaptability during their recent Test series in India, where they performed admirably in challenging conditions. Latham believes this experience will play a crucial role in their approach against England. “The most pleasing thing was how we went about things in tough conditions. We constantly talk about adapting quickly, and it’s just as important to do the same here,” he added.
With matches scheduled in Christchurch, Wellington, and Hamilton, the series presents an opportunity for New Zealand to consolidate their position in the World Test Championship standings. While England has little to gain in terms of qualification, their form and aggressive style under Ben Stokes promise a challenging contest.
The Kiwis are keen to capitalize on their home advantage, knowing that a whitewash is their only pathway to the final at Lord’s. As they gear up for the opening Test, Latham’s focus remains on execution and consistency.
