Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) started their IPL 2023 season with a comprehensive eight-wicket win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in their first match today at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Virat Kohli’s 82 not-out and Faf du Plessis’ 73 were star performers for RCB who put 148 runs opening partnership sharing their third-century stand in IPL.

Chasing a challenging target of 172 runs, RCB openers du Plessis and Kohli got off to a strong start, with captain du Plessis leading the charge and helping the team reach the 50-run mark in just 5.3 overs. During the powerplay, RCB racked up 53 runs without losing a wicket, leaving MI bowlers struggling to find answers. Du Plessis completed his half-century in just 29 balls, and together with Kohli, they took RCB past the 100-run mark in 10.3 overs. Kohli reached his 50 in 38 balls, and their partnership seemed unassailable.

MI finally broke through when Arshad Khan dismissed du Plessis for 73, but RCB had already scored 148 runs. Cameron Green dismissed Dinesh Karthik for a duck in the next over, but Glenn Maxwell joined Kohli, and they quickly crossed the 150-run mark. Maxwell hit two sixes in just three balls, bringing RCB within striking distance of victory. Kohli sealed the win, chasing down the target in just 16.2 overs.

Earlier, after being put in to bat, MI had a disappointing start. RCB’s bowlers kept the pressure on with accurate line and length. Ishan Kishan fell to Mohammed Siraj’s pace for just 10, leaving MI at 12/1. Green and Reece Topley claimed two quick wickets, leaving MI at 16/2 and then 20/3, with Rohit Sharma departing for only one run.

MI’s struggles continued after the powerplay, with Suryakumar Yadav being dismissed for 15. Tilak Verma, however, provided some resistance with a 42-ball 50, and MI eventually finished their innings at 171/7. Karn Sharma was RCB’s best bowler, taking 2/32, while Topley, Siraj, Akash Deep, Bracewell, and Harshal Patel each claimed a wicket.
