Ricky Ponting Praises Beau Webster’s Consistency After Australia Call-Up

Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has lauded Tasmania all-rounder Beau Webster following his maiden call-up to the national squad ahead of the second Test against India at the Adelaide Oval. Webster was named as cover for Mitchell Marsh, who is being monitored for fitness concerns after the first Test in Perth.

Ponting praised Webster’s consistent performances over the past few years, saying, “Congratulations to Beau. He’s had three or four years of really good, high-quality, consistent all-round cricket.” Webster’s selection comes on the back of impressive red-ball form, including a standout performance in the unofficial Test series against India A, where he was the second-highest run-scorer for Australia A with 145 runs at an average of 72.50 and took seven wickets at an average under 20.

Webster’s versatility as an all-rounder, capable of bowling both off-spin and medium pace, adds depth to Australia’s squad. In his 93-match first-class career, he has amassed 5,297 runs at an average of 37.83 with 12 centuries and taken 148 wickets at an average of 37.39. This year alone, Webster has scored 1,121 runs in 15 matches at an average of 53.38, including three centuries and five fifties, with a best score of 167*.

The 29-year-old’s inclusion provides a valuable backup for Marsh, who bowled 17 overs in the Perth Test—the most he has delivered in a match since 2019—but has been managing injury concerns since the UK tour. Australian skipper Pat Cummins acknowledged Marsh’s fitness issues, stating, “He was a little bit sore towards the end of this Test match. The next 10 days will be crucial for him to freshen up and recover.”
