Pant’s comeback follows a challenging period marked by a life-threatening road accident in December 2022. His return to competitive cricket was first seen during the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. Playing for Delhi Capitals, Pant emerged as the team’s top run-getter, amassing 446 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of over 155, including three half-centuries. Despite his efforts, Delhi Capitals finished sixth, narrowly missing the playoffs.
In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pant expressed his excitement and relief at being back with the Indian team. “This is one thing I missed a lot – practicing with the Indian team and playing for them. Getting back on the field with the Indian jersey on, it is a different feel altogether and this is something I missed a lot,” he said. Pant, now noticeably leaner and in great shape, added, “Seeing the teammates, meeting them again, spending time, having fun, and enjoying conversations – it’s something I really enjoy.”
Playing in the USA is a novel experience for the Indian team. Pant noted the unique opportunity this presents for the sport. “Playing in the USA has opened up a new channel for cricket. It’s great for the sport’s growth globally and beneficial for USA cricket as well,” he remarked. He also highlighted the need to adapt to the new conditions and brighter sunlight, expressing optimism about performing well in the upcoming matches.
Pant’s T20 World Cup statistics include seven matches and five innings, where he has scored 87 runs at an average of 21.75, with his best score being 39. His presence is expected to bolster India’s efforts as they aim to end their ICC trophy drought, having last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.
