A fiery spell from Yuzvendra Chahal and Trent Boult, along with strong performances from openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler, led Rajasthan Royals to a comprehensive victory over Delhi Capitals in the 2023 Indian Premier League. The Royals defeated the Capitals by 57 runs at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Saturday, handing Delhi their third consecutive loss.
Chasing a daunting target of 200 runs, the Capitals stumbled early, losing two wickets without scoring in the opening over. Trent Boult struck twice, dismissing opener Prithvi Shaw and Manish Pandey. David Warner and Rilee Rossouw tried to steady the innings, but Rossouw fell to R Ashwin for 14, leaving the Capitals at 36/3 in five overs.
After the power play, Delhi were 38/3, with Warner and Lalit Yadav at the crease. The duo brought up their 50-run partnership off just 33 balls, and with Lalit’s help, the Capitals crossed the 100-run mark in 12.5 overs. However, Boult and Chahal struck again, claiming key wickets and restricting the Capitals to 142/9 in their 20 overs.
Earlier in the match, half-centuries from openers Jaiswal and Buttler propelled Rajasthan Royals to a massive 199/4. Jaiswal and Buttler dominated the Delhi bowlers, racing to 68/0 at the end of the power play. Despite a change in the bowling lineup, the Capitals failed to break the opening partnership until Jaiswal was finally dismissed for 60 in the ninth over.
Buttler continued to anchor the innings, scoring his second half-century of IPL 2023 and finishing with 79 runs off 51 balls. Shimron Hetmyer played the role of finisher, remaining unbeaten on 39 as the Royals set a formidable target for the Capitals.
