Shubman Gill joins Indian Team’s practice session ahead of high-stakes clash against Pakistan at CWC 2023

Shubman Gill has been confirmed to return to practice ahead of the highly-anticipated World Cup clash against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Rohit Sharma earlier gave update regarding his availability during the match press conference.

Gill, who arrived in Ahmedabad while wearing a mask earlier in the week, notably appeared without it as he joined his teammates for the practice session. The young opener had been undergoing treatment in Chennai, which forced him to miss India’s first two matches of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup against Australia and Afghanistan.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had confirmed Gill’s absence from the squad for the game against Afghanistan, citing his ongoing medical treatment in Chennai.

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh expressed hope and optimism about Gill’s readiness to participate in the electrifying clash. Yuvraj, who was awarded the Player of the Tournament in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, shared his thoughts exclusively with ANI, saying, “Shubham Gill ko maine tagda kar diya hai [I have strengthened Shubham Gill]. I told him that I had played in the World Cup while battling cancer, so I got ready quickly to join the team. Hopefully, he will be ready for the India vs Pakistan game. When you have a fever and dengue, it is really tough to play a cricket match, and I have experienced that. So I hope that if he is fit, then he will definitely play.”

Gill’s exceptional form in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) this year has made him a key asset for the Indian team. In 20 ODIs in 2023, he has amassed an impressive 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate just above 105. His remarkable consistency includes five centuries and five half-centuries, with a career-best score of 208.
