Sri Lanka Sacks Entire Cricket Board Following Humiliating Defeat Against India

In the wake of Sri Lanka’s devastating 302-run loss to India in the ongoing Cricket World Cup, the Sri Lankan Sports Minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, has taken drastic action by suspending the entire Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board, according to a report by the Sri Lanka-based Daily Mirror.

The shocking defeat against India, which left Sri Lanka reeling at 14-6 at one point and eventually dismissed for a mere 55 runs, triggered widespread outrage among cricket fans and the public. In response to the growing discontent, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has dissolved the existing SLC board and put in place an Interim Committee for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), led by none other than the legendary World Cup-winning captain, Arjuna Ranatunga.

Arjuna Ranatunga, who famously led Sri Lanka to victory in the 1996 World Cup, will chair the new interim board. The committee comprises seven members, including a retired Supreme Court judge and a former board president, entrusted with the task of revitalizing Sri Lanka’s cricketing fortunes.

The humiliating loss to India took place at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where India posted a formidable total of 357 runs in their first innings. Sri Lanka’s batting lineup crumbled under the relentless pace attack of the Indian team, with Mohammed Shami claiming a five-wicket haul and Mohammed Siraj taking four wickets.

Adding to Sri Lanka’s woes, their hopes of securing a spot in the World Cup semi-finals were extinguished following another defeat to Bangladesh by three wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. With their semi-final dreams shattered, Sri Lanka will now set their sights on securing a place in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 by striving to finish in the top eight of international cricket.

The decision to overhaul the cricket board comes as a response to the national team’s recent poor performances and aims to rejuvenate Sri Lanka’s cricketing prospects on the global stage. The new interim committee, headed by Arjuna Ranatunga, will face the daunting task of restoring pride and competitiveness to Sri Lankan cricket.
