  • David accumulated five demerit points during the season after his third Level 1 offence, triggering an automatic suspension.
  • The Australian will miss the opening match of IPL 2027 despite helping RCB win a second consecutive IPL title.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David has been suspended for one Indian Premier League match after breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The IPL confirmed on Monday that David has been fined 50 percent of his match fee and received two additional demerit points for a Level 1 offence. The latest punishment takes his season tally to five demerit points, which automatically results in a one-match suspension under league regulations.

According to the IPL, David violated Article 2.9 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to throwing a ball or any piece of cricket equipment in an inappropriate or dangerous manner at or near a player, official, umpire, match referee or any other individual during a match.

The incident occurred during the 10th over of Gujarat Titans’ innings in the final. Following the fall of a wicket, David was found to have aggressively thrown an ice bag in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon.

“David was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to ‘throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match’,” the IPL said in a statement.

“The incident occurred during the 10th over of the first innings when, following the fall of a wicket, David threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon,” the statement added.

David admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.

The Australian batter had already committed two previous Level 1 offences earlier in the season. He received one demerit point in Match 20 and two demerit points in Match 54. The latest offence added another two points, taking his total to five.

“David admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by the Match Referee, Mr Javagal Srinath. This was David’s third Level 1 offence of the season, having committed his first offence in Match 20 (one Demerit Point) and his second offence in Match 54 (two Demerit Points). He has now accumulated five Demerit Points, which result in a one-game suspension. Accordingly, he will be suspended for RCB’s first game of the next IPL season or the first game of the franchise he represents in IPL 2027,” the IPL statement said.

As a result, David will miss the opening match of IPL 2027, whether he remains with Royal Challengers Bengaluru or joins another franchise before the next season.

The disciplinary action came just a day after RCB celebrated a historic achievement. Led by Rajat Patidar, Bengaluru successfully defended their IPL title by defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the final.

After restricting Gujarat Titans to 155/8, RCB chased down the target with two overs to spare. Virat Kohli played a match-winning innings, remaining unbeaten on 75 from 42 deliveries as Bengaluru secured their second consecutive IPL trophy.

With the victory, RCB became only the third team in IPL history after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to successfully defend the title. However, the celebrations have now been slightly overshadowed by David’s suspension, which will rule him out of the first game of the 2027 season.
