Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Becomes Youngest-Ever Orange Cap Winner in IPL History

Rajasthan Royals sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has created history by becoming the youngest player ever to win the Orange Cap in the Indian Premier League (IPL), capping off a record-breaking 2026 season with the bat.

The 15-year-old prodigy secured the prestigious award after Gujarat Titans openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan failed to make big scores in the IPL 2026 final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

At just 15 years and 65 days old, Sooryavanshi shattered the record for the youngest Orange Cap winner in IPL history. The previous mark was held by Sai Sudharsan, who won the award in 2025 at 23 years and 231 days, while Shubman Gill had previously held the record after his successful 2023 campaign at 23 years and 263 days.

The Bihar-born batter enjoyed one of the most extraordinary seasons ever produced by a player in the tournament. Across 16 matches, Sooryavanshi amassed 776 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 237.31, finishing comfortably ahead of his rivals in the race for the Orange Cap.

His explosive batting also rewrote another major IPL record. Sooryavanshi smashed 72 sixes during the season, breaking Chris Gayle’s long-standing record of 59 sixes in a single IPL campaign.

The teenager’s position at the top of the run-scoring charts remained secure after Gujarat Titans’ top-order failed to deliver in the final. Shubman Gill, who entered the match as one of the contenders, was dismissed for just 10 runs, while defending Orange Cap holder Sai Sudharsan managed only 12 runs.

With both Gujarat openers falling cheaply, neither player was able to overtake Sooryavanshi’s tally. Even Virat Kohli, who started the final fifth on the list with 600 runs, required an unlikely 177 runs in the championship match to challenge the Rajasthan Royals star.

Sooryavanshi’s season could have been even more remarkable. He narrowly missed matching Virat Kohli’s record of four centuries in a single IPL season after being dismissed in the nineties on three occasions. He scored 93 against Lucknow Super Giants, 97 in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and 96 in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans, in addition to his century against Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier in the tournament.

The young batter also achieved another milestone by becoming the fastest player to reach 1,000 IPL runs in terms of balls faced. He reached the landmark in just 440 deliveries, surpassing the previous record held by West Indies power-hitter Andre Russell.

In terms of innings, Sooryavanshi became the second-fastest batter to reach 1,000 IPL runs, accomplishing the feat in 23 innings. Former Australian opener Shaun Marsh remains the quickest, having reached the mark in 21 innings.

Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach, record-breaking six-hitting ability and consistency throughout the season have made him one of the biggest stories of IPL 2026. His performances have earned widespread praise from fans and experts alike, with many already viewing him as a future star for Indian cricket across all formats.

The IPL Governing Council is expected to formally confirm Sooryavanshi as the Orange Cap winner following the conclusion of the IPL 2026 final, but the teenager’s place in the tournament’s record books is already secure after a historic season.

“Extraordinary player”: Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar hails Sooryavanshi after teen sensation becomes youngest IPL Orange Cap winner

Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma praised Rajasthan Royals youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the 15-year-old became the youngest player in IPL history to win the Orange Cap. Calling him an “extraordinary player,” Sharma said it was a pleasure to watch Sooryavanshi deliver such remarkable performances at a young age. The Bihar-born batter enjoyed a record-breaking IPL 2026 season, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30 and becoming the youngest-ever Orange Cap winner at 15 years and 65 days old.

Sooryavanshi dominated the season’s awards, winning the Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker, Orange Cap and Super Sixes awards. He smashed a record 72 sixes, reached 1,000 IPL runs in just 440 balls, and narrowly missed multiple centuries after being dismissed in the nineties three times. Reflecting on his success, the teenager credited the support of teammates and staff while emphasizing the importance of fitness and adapting his game. His breakthrough campaign has established him as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket.
