Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant Poised for India’s T20 World Cup Squad Selection

Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant are on the brink of being named in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, according to sources close to the selection committee. Kohli’s scintillating form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, amassing over 300 runs in five matches, including a stunning century, makes his inclusion almost a certainty.

Despite some debates surrounding his strike rate, Kohli’s consistent performance in the IPL has solidified his position as an indispensable asset for the Indian team in the forthcoming World Cup, as reported by Cricbuzz. Kohli’s expertise and experience in high-pressure games are invaluable assets that the selectors are keen to leverage.

On the other hand, Rishabh Pant, the dynamic wicket-keeper batsman, is also likely to make a comeback to the Indian squad after a hiatus. Pant’s cricketing career took a pause following a severe accident 16 months ago, which had sidelined him from international cricket since. However, his remarkable recovery and commendable performance in the IPL 2024 have put him back in contention for the World Cup squad.

Pant, who has previously represented India in 33 Test matches, 30 ODIs, and 66 T20Is, has been a game-changer with his aggressive batting and adept wicket-keeping skills. His return to form post-recovery, including a knee surgery, has been a beacon of resilience and determination, attracting praise from cricketing circles worldwide. Australian cricket legend Michael Clarke expressed his admiration for Pant’s comeback, voicing his support for Pant’s swift return to the international arena.

Despite scoring only 1 in his last IPL outing, Pant’s overall tally of 153 runs in five matches, with two notable half-centuries, underscores his readiness to compete at the global level once again. His competition includes other talented wicket-keepers like Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Jitesh Sharma, but Pant’s unique blend of quick scoring and sharp wicket-keeping skills gives him an edge.

BCCI President and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly recently lauded Pant’s recovery and IPL performance, especially highlighting his batting prowess in the last two matches. Ganguly expressed his desire to watch Pant in a few more IPL games before making a definitive statement regarding his selection for the international team.
