IPL 2023: Usage of “Impact Player” diminishes the significance of allrounders in the game – Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals’ head coach Ricky Ponting has noted that the implementation of the “Impact Player” rule in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) will be largely influenced by whether a team bats or bowls first, and could potentially diminish the significance of allrounders in the game.

The IPL 2023 will introduce tactical substitutions in this season, following their debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 competition. This change is expected to bring a new strategic element to the IPL, although it remains unclear whether the system will be identical to the ‘Impact Player’ rule used during the SMAT. If so, it will provide teams with increased tactical flexibility.

Ponting explained that the choice to utilize an Impact Player will be determined by the team’s decision to bat or bowl first, and could be based on various scenarios. He highlighted that this rule might make allrounders less important, as teams may opt for specialized batsmen or bowlers rather than “bits and pieces” players.

Despite this, Ponting mentioned that Delhi Capitals will closely watch allrounder Mitchell Marsh, who had a strong IPL 2022 performance, scoring 251 runs in eight games with a strike rate of 132.80. Marsh has recently recovered from ankle surgery and has been bowling for the past few weeks. Ponting anticipates that Marsh will play a crucial role in the team, bowling some overs as well.

IPL 2023 will kick off with a blockbuster match between Gujarat Giants and Chennai Super Kings on March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Fans can follow IPL Live score here with ball by ball commentary for all Delhi Capitals matches
